Locarno unveils the program of its parallel sections


– The festival returns to the impressive Piazza Grande and this year offers a new competitive Corti d’autore program, in the Pardi di domani section

UPDATE (July 20, 2021): 100 minutes (Sto minut iz zhizni Ivana Denisovicha), the new film by the Russian filmmaker Gleb Panfilov, Golden Leopard in 1969, was added to Piazza Grande.

the Locarno Film Festival today unveiled the programming of its 74th edition (from August 4 to 14), including its parallel sections (in addition to the In Competition and Out of Competition films – read the news).

The gigantic Piazza Grande will host 14 films (7 world premieres) this year, half of which are European productions. Among the world premieres are Italian feature films Beckett through Ferdinando Cito Filomarino, the opening film of this edition, and the highly anticipated animated film Yaya e Lennie – Freedom That Walks through Alexandre rak which speaks poetically about important environmental issues that are taking more and more place in public space. Switzerland could not be invited for the 50 years of the Piazza and will therefore be present with Monte Verità, the new film by Stefan Jäger, which transports us to the heart of a legendary and free community. The world premiere is also Pink from the French director Aurélie Saada, with a near-octogenarian who redefines the concept of old age, and the detective film Countryside through Stefan Ruzowitsky. The program of the Cineasti del presente competition, which represents for Locarno the place where the public can discover a selection of first or second works directed by young talents from all over the world, was also announced. From this year, this competition will also add the awards for best actress and best actor to the Golden Leopard and the award for best director. This year, there will be many selected European productions, which will allow Locarno audiences to enjoy the best of tomorrow’s cinema. Among these are The Legionnaire by young Belarusian but Italian by adoption director Hleb Papuan; german No one is with the calves from the German and Iranian director Sabrina sarabi, a movie based on newcomer’s book Alina’s Grass where the province shows itself in all its brutal reality; French Our eternal summer through Emilie Aussel, a bittersweet portrait of a summer where adolescent lightness goes hand in hand with a sudden entry into adulthood; Wet sand by the Georgian director and former student of the HEAD in Geneva Helene Naveriani; Zahori by the Argentinian director but also a former student of the HEAD in Geneva Marì Alessandrini, a magical and mysterious journey through the steppes of Patagonia; Streams by the Tunisian director Mehdi Hmili; fraternity by the young Italian director Francesco Montagner which courageously tackles the sensitive issue of terrorism and religious extremism; Sainte Émy, the first feature film by the Greek director and screenwriter Araceli Lemos, in which mysticism and introspection perfectly duo, and If the weather is fine by Filipino director and editor Carlo Francisco Manatad.

In addition to the newly appointed artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro, the festival is offering us this year a new competitive program entitled Corti d’autore, in the section Leopards of tomorrow, with new short films by Radu Jude, Bertrand mandico, Yann Gonzalez and also Marco bellocchio among others. Finally, the independent section Critics’ Week, programmed by the Association of Swiss Cinema Journalists (ASFJ), also unveiled its selection.
